Sisolak Administration Key Facts: Public Safety

From his time as a County Commissioner through his governorship, Governor Sisolak prioritized legislation to improve public safety, reduce crime, and support law enforcement officers.

In the STOS on February 23rd, Governor Sisolak touched on some of the ways his administration has supported law enforcement and made our streets safer.

●      Under the Sisolak administration, the percentage of our state budget devoted to law enforcement is #1 in the country.

●      In December 2021, Nevada secured nearly $12 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice to keep our communities safe by investing in recruitment for officers, preventing youth crime, and more.

●      Under Governor Sisolak’s leadership, Nevada took significant steps to curb gun violence. In 2019, Governor Sisolak signed AB 291 into law to ban bump stocks and SB 143 to close the gun show loophole and require common-sense background checks on all gun sales.

These steps help protect our communities from senseless gun violence and keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

Additionally, funding for State Police is up 11% since the governor took office.

During his speech on February 23rd, Governor Sisolak announced he will propose a salary increase for State Police officers – which would be their first significant pay increase since 2006.

Governor Sisolak knows that safe streets support our citizens and our economy by encouraging new families and businesses to move to Nevada.

His administration will continue supporting law enforcement officers and passing legislation that both improves the criminal justice system, protects Nevadans, and keeps our streets safe.
