Project Overview

The Power Scholars Academy addresses the multi-faceted needs of students and families in Southern Nevada by providing out-of-school-time efforts that are rich with data-driven and engaging instruction in Common Core Math and English Language Arts that is tailored to individual student needs. This academic instruction is paired with diverse and fun enrichment activities such as STEM and humanities projects, reading and leadership clubs, field trips, sports, and Y P.E. These activities are complimented by family supports like free meals, family events, Take a Hike, mental health supports, and a Family Resource Library.

The YMCA is uniquely positioned to create a no-cost lifeguard pipeline as one of the only entities with year-long aquatics facilities. We will begin by recruiting young adults from local high schools and transporting them to the YMCA. Over eleven days, the prospects will develop critical swim and lifeguarding skills. Upon graduation, they will receive a transferable lifeguard credential and be connected with employment opportunities in municipal, resort, and YMCA pools.
