Poetry Promise

Project Overview

We’ve brought working poets to schools, libraries, community and after-school programs for four years. Our program is based on one running successfully in CA for over 50 years. We don’t teach English or editing, but emphasize creative expression. Our workshop leaders are trained to engage students in creative ways that are fun, exciting, and educational. The leaders are poets who convey a sense of excitement in writing too often missing.

Our program leaders represent diverse, minority communities. Many are young, and we work with all ages from grammar to high school, even state or community colleges. We are based in Las Vegas and will work only in the 50 lowest-income zips in Nevada, as determined by American Community Survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau. These students are in more desperate need of relief, inspiration, and confidence about themselves and the future.
